Summary of the Ghana project:

CSRDevelopments-Facts

The Volta Lake is the world’s largest man-made lake by area, with a surface of 8,515 square kilometers (3,861 square miles).  It came into being with the construction of the Akosombo Dam in 1964, a 1020 megawatt hydroelectric project managed by the Volta River Authority (VRA).  It supplies power to Ghana, and neighbouring Togo and Benin.

The flooding submerged vast tracts of forest and required the relocation of 78,000 people to newly created townships on the lake’s higher banks.

The lake is now a transportation corridor for the residents of the various lake-side communities as well as a thriving source of fish.

For years, VRA and the Government of Ghana have been seeking solutions to remove standing trees that create safety hazards resulting in boating accidents and many drownings.

Underwater tree salvaging was explored, but not considered viable until CSR Developments launched the current project.
