Assheton L. Stewart Carter is the chief advisor, Environmental Leadership, Center for Environmental Leadership in Business, at Conservation International in Washington D.C. He is a strategist, planner and expert in environmental and social issues. For twelve years, he has guided senior management of international companies in building leadership, environmental and sustainability strategies, as well as climate change solutions.
Carter has focused his career on sustainability in the extractive industries working with and advising companies including Alcoa, AngloAmerican, BG, BHP Billiton, BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, De Beers, ExxonMobil, Newmont Mining, RioTinto and Xstrata. More recently, he has led development of environmental strategies at Wal-Mart, Disney, United Airlines and Royal Caribbean. He also serves on the editorial board of Sustainability: Science, Practice and Policy.
Before joining Conservation International, Carter was a senior research fellow at the Warwick Business School, UK, where he worked with the management team to build the Corporate Citizenship Unit. He started his career as an equity salesman in a leading London Stock Exchange company, where he launched two companies on the European markets, and has held management positions in start-up companies in the U.K., Thailand and Spain.
Carter holds a doctorate in Business and Society Studies from the University of Bath, School of Management, and is a member of the Royal Agricultural College (UK), from which he holds a first class honours degree.
